Hoge Runs…and Eats!

Just another foodie who loves to run!

*Le Sigh* September 8, 2010

The above “zzz” are me pretending to sleep, it was NOT a peaceful night at the Hoge Runs house last night.  It’s been super quiet/peaceful/friendly/relaxing at our apartment complex for the last 6 months (can you believe it’s been 6 months since we moved in??) but last night, ugh. To start with, I get random bouts of insomnia which just plain stink to begin with.  Last night C was quietly watching an unnamed cartoon with his headphones on and the light from the TV was driving me bonkers.  If it wasn’t for the insomnia bout it would have been cool, so I waited an hour to ask him to turn it off start sighing and tossing/turning loudly. And then, around 11, the noise started.  We apparently have new neighbors across the courtyard from us and they were SO freaking loud!  They were playing random music – everything from techno to Jay Z to Colbie Calliat, had all their lights on, were sitting on the porch smoking/drinking/taking FB pictures (“oh my gosh, this pic is so hottttttt”) and finally at midnight we called the “Courtesy Patrol.”  They’re essentially the mall cops of our apartment complex and sometime around 1 the neighbors either gave up on their mini-party (there were only 2 of them, so weird) or the rent-a-cops asked them to shut it down.

And then, I was awake til almost 2.  Blech!!!  And wouldn’t ya know, I woke up again at 5:30??  Does anyone have any tricks for dealing with insomnia?  I get a random patch of 3-4 days every month or so and absolutely hate it.

A few fun eats from yesterday, as I’m barely hanging on mentally today and can’t carry on much witty banter 😉

BBQ cheeseburger meatloaf for lunch:

This was leftover from Monday night and so.freaking.good.  It was the crunchy corner piece and all the BBQ sauce had caramelized on the edges and was loaded with flavor.  I hadn’t made this meatloaf forever, and hadn’t made it with hamburger for even longer than that, but grass fed hamburger was on sale at Whole Foods this weekend and I couldn’t resist.  The meatloaf contains 3 kinds of BBQ sauce (since we were running low and needed to finish the bottles), Paula Deen’s Butt Massage seasoning (hehehehehehehe), cubed sharp cheddar, bread crumbs, an egg, and bacon.  The bacon truly takes it to another level…mmmm!  Expect to see more leftovers later this week!

Along with my meatloaf I had a spinach, bleu cheese, tomato, carrot, celery, craisin, and candied walnut salad.  For those of you who bring salads for lunch – do you have a way to make the spinach not get slimy by lunch time?  I pack my salad the night before and it’s perfectly dry and crisp (I bring dressing in a separate container) and by the time lunch rolls around my spinach is wilted and kind of creepy.  Suggestions??

And my afternoon snack was a pretty cup of lemon yogurt topped with fresh raspberries, perfection!  I don’t know why I haven’t tried this combo before.

Dinner last night was chicken enchiladas – you’ve seen ’em before, you’ll see ’em again, so I’ll spare you a picture 🙂  Post-dinner I worked on a throw for the couch (pics to come soon as it gets a little bigger, right now it’s kind of like a sad scarf), and we caught up on this week’s episode of The Glades and The Colony.  September is such a crazy TV month – True Blood finale, Dexter premiere, Glee premiere, Grey’s Anatomy premiere, Lone Star premiere, and on and on.  What fall TV show are you most excited to see back?

And with that…have a wonderful day bloggies!  I’m now going to go see about getting a coffee IV set up 😛

April 2, 2010

Before I get to my day…have you seen this?!?!?!?  **Insert pre-teen squeal here…eeeeeeeee!!!!!!!**  Eclipse Trailer

Okie dokie, geek out over!  Phew, calming down…

Anyway, going back to this morning, I slept until 8 and was just awake, even though it was my day off!  I got dressed and headed out for a run, it was awful. Today was a good example for listening to your body, the wind was freezing cold and my lungs were not digging it.  So, I listened to my body and called it a day at .88 miles.  Not a great accomplishment, not a speed record, but, I know that slogging out the other 2.12 miles wouldn’t have done anything but make me even more miserable.  So…I came inside and made breakfast 🙂

I don’t think I’ve introduced you to the Keurig, it’s AMAZING.  This morning I made a white chocolate mocha using 1 cup of white hot chocolate and 1 of mocha.

Obviously I made this drink in my favorite mug and topped with a good amount of whipped cream 😀

To eat, I made a not very pretty scramble of eggs, feta, cheddar, avocado and salsa.

Delish, but not very photogenic 😉

After breakfast I went to REI with my member dividend for the year. This year was a big year for our dividend as we bought my Garmin 405 at REI this year. I was able to find my running shoes (Asics Gel 1100 series) and snagged them for only $10 after the 20% off coupon and dividend!  Score!!  They are very cool kicks, white/blue/silver and white/blue striped laces!  Love ’em.  I’ve been wearing the 1100 series for a few years now and have no desire to change…hear that Asics?  Don’t stop making my shoes!!  🙂

And then errands…I hit Costco for staples and snagged 2 Adidas dri-fit tees for $11 each!  Apres Costco I hit up Target and picked up the rest of the groceries and some organizer baskets for the fridge.  It’s so weird, but other than produce our fridge doesn’t have any drawers!  Our old apartment shelf had a lunch meat/cheese drawer and it made the fridge seem so much bigger.  I cleaned out the fridge when I got home and put one basket on the bottom shelf with lunch meat/cheese and one on the top shelf with yogurt.  We go through 10 yogurts a week, so they end up all over the fridge! Then I organized the pantry and feel so much better!  Things aren’t falling over when I open the door.  Phew!

And then it was lunch time! I used a whole wheat wrap from Costco and then added some sliced cheddar cheese and a local/all natural/no nitrate/no nitrite/uncured hot dog, wrapped it all together and grilled it on the George.  yum!!  I had some baked chips on the side with lots of ketchup and mustard for dipping.

I also had a “smooshed fruit” fruit roll up.

After lunch I cleaned the fish tank, did 2 loads of laundry, cleaned the kitchen and living room.  It is so much easier to do chores on a Friday off since it doesn’t feel like you’re missing any bit of the weekend 😀

Chris got home around 5 and we debated what to have for dinner, we finally decided just to cook at home and I knew just what to make. Kind of. I had picked up some sweet and sour sauce at the store and went down that path.  First, I put some brown rice, frozen veggies and Better than Buillion in the rice cooker.

While the rice cooked away I got out my Paula Deen “dredging dishes” and set up a coating station.  I cubed 2 chicken breasts and dredged them in egg and plain Progresso bread crumbs then fried the cubes with a little olive oil until brown. When frying cubes like this – make sure not to over load the pan, I cooked our chicken in 3 batches so I could turn and get an even browness on all sides.

While the chicken cooked I made 2 sauces. The first was starring La Choy sweet & sour sauce. The sauce was pretty sweet so I added a dash of Tapatio to spice it up a little!

The second is an old favorite – Panda Express orange sauce and low sodium soy sauce. Mmm!

And here’s the final product!

Chris and I pretended we were in a real restaurant and shared “entrees” 🙂 We both had 1/2 sweet & sour chicken and 1/2 orange chicken.  To drink, we each had an Izze soda.  Chris had grapefruit and I had berry.  These “sodas” are great if you want a fizzy beverage without all the junk in soda. Each drink is fruit juice + sparkling water.

And now it’s sadly time to go pick up the kitchen, again, lol.  It’s never ending.  We’re taping Jamie Oliver’s show to watch later this weekend…really loving his message!

By the way, did you catch Grey’s last night?  We just watched it tonight during dinner…good, good, good!  I did want to smack the one intern who I can’t think of her name…the one making eyes at Derek.  Leave him alone, he’s married, you little tart!!

Ok bloggies, have a fabulous Friday night!

Giveaway Time! February 7, 2010

Hi Bloggies!!  I am still alive, but ridiculously tired at the moment.  This week was a blur – I was in the office 58-60 hours + 10ish hours of commuting…so I’m one tired lady!

I promise to get back into being a better blogger this week, but here are a few quick highlights of the past week:

Monday – ran 3.5 miles

Tuesday – ran 4.03 miles

Friday – got the mega draft mailed out and came home at 4 (and saw the sun!!!)

Saturday – ran 2.97 miles

Today – ran 6.01 miles

There were some great dinners scattered throughout the week, Sunday last week I made a big pot of crockpot taco chicken – I mixed a can of Rotel, about 1/2 a can of water, taco seasoning, red pepper flakes, chili powder and cumin and then added 4 organic chicken breasts on top. I cooked these on high for about 7 hours (starting with frozen chicken) and it turned out great!  Sunday night we made gorditas, later in the week we had wraps on whole-wheat tortillas and enchilada casserole.  Chris has been doing an awesome job of cooking these last few weeks while I’ve been living at work.

Did you see the season premiere of Lost Wednesday?  I didn’t make it home til part way through the 2nd hour, but we’re doing to try to watch this season and see if the writers really can answer all the questions in one season.  And Grey’s this week?  Not the best episode in my opinion, it was kind of like filler for next week’s episode/the rest of the season.  I haven’t watched this week’s episode of Vampire Diaries yet, but did catch Secret Diary of a Call Girl last night.  Now you probably hate me after I admit to watching…it’s not porn, it’s a hilarious show, I promise!!  I love Belle, the hooker with a heart ❤ 🙂

  • Moving on…This week I got a awesome little surprise from the kind folks at Safeway and Fiber One (courtesy of My Blog Spark).  Apparently the new Fiber One yogurts have been making a big splash in the blog world including the big time food blogger – Hungry Girl.  Check out what she has to say about the Fiber One yogurt here. In addition to an awesome coupon to try the Fiber One yogurt for free, I received a $50 gift card to the Safeway Family of stores (Safeway, Dominick’s, Von’s, Tom Thumb, Randalls, and Genuardi’s)…so obviously Friday night Chris and I hit the new Safeway in our neighborhood up for some shopping (after a buy-one-get-one night at Tokyo Joe’s and a puppy visit at the mall, of course). The new Safeway has been mega-renovated to have about 1/4 of the store look very Whole Foods like.  Aisle upon aisle of organic goodies and even a DIY peanut/almond/cashew butter bar!  Chris tried the peanut + chocolate chip butter and I tried the honey roasted peanut butter (from the machines that just mash the nuts). If we hadn’t bought a GIANT jar of organic PB at Costco last weekend, we would have bought both flavors!  We tried to focus on healthy things at Safeway, but some naughty bits wound up in the cart as well.  With our $50 gift card + $24 of our own dollars we purchased:
  • 6-pack of Stella Artois pale ale
  • 6-pack of Dundee Honey Brown ale (did I mention the remodeled Safeway has a full liquor store??)
  • 4-pack of Fiber One yogurt in vanilla
  • Freschetta ham & pineapple Rising Crust pizza
  • Turkey pepperoni
  • 3 bags of chips (they were buy 2 get one free) – Cool Ranch Doritos, Nacho Cheese Doritos and MultiGrain Tostitos
  • Bag of Malt-o-Meal Cinnamon Toast Crunch
  • 2 cans of baked beans
  • 1 bag of onion buns
  • 1 People magazine (The Duggar’s were on the cover, I couldn’t resist)
  • 1 bagged salad mix
  • 1 onion
  • 1 can of peeled whole tomatoes
  • 1 box of organic free-range chicken stock
  • …and a few other things I’m completely spacing.

All said it was a really good trip to Safeway and the commercials about Safeway lowering their prices really did seem true – nearly everything had a “just reduced” sticker on it!

I will be giving my review of the Fiber One yogurt this week – if you have a chance to make it to your Safeway Family store by Tuesday February 9th – don’t forget to try a pack or 2 of Fiber One yogurt, they are on special this week, 2-4 packs for $4!

Safeway, Fiber One and My Blog Spark are so excited about this promotion they have offered to give one lucky reader their very own $50 Safeway Family of Stores Giftcard.  All you need to do is respond to this post by 5pm on Tuesday the 9th telling me which grocery store is your favorite and why.  I’ll pick a winner during my evening post Tuesday!

Have a wonderful Superbowl Sunday bloggies!!

Hi Bloggies!

So much to talk about…I promise that someday I will finish filling you in on the 3 items I have left from my list last week…or was that the week before?  Time flies when you’re working 55 hours a week and buying a house 😉

First off – did you all see Grey’s last night?  I love Owen, I know I say it too much when I talk about Grey’s…but seriously, I could kiss his face off.  At the end of Grey’s last night I accidentally slapped Chris 2 or 3 times when Owen was talking to Christina.  I get excited, what can I say 😛  Unsure about my feelings on the Lexie/Sloan subject and wanted to give Alex a big hug.  I’m just over Izzie…

I didn’t see the Vampire Diaries last night as it’s on the same time as Grey’s, but plan to watch this evening…more hotties!

Speaking of vampires, and hotties, I finished book #8 of the Sookie Stackhouse series last night before Grey’s.  There was a LOT of Eric, Bill and Alcide action in this book, I was glad to just have familiar characters for the most part and not spiraling off into a whole new storyline.  I don’t want to spoil the Sookie/Eric/Bill/Alcide plot for those of you who are only series watchers and haven’t read the books yet, but I’m so excited for this season to see it all unravel – or see the writer’s version of where it will go next 😀

This week I also finished books #3 and #4 of the Vampire Diaries series because I have close to 2 hours a day sitting on the train and well…I’m a bit obsessed once I start one of these books.  I again have nothing bad to say about either of these books, they were really quick reads and just fun overall.

I’m so looking forward to appliance shopping (price shopping, not real shopping), looking at furniture and paint colors this weekend.  We’re trying to have a plan of attack ready for after we close on the house and have to buy all new furniture, a new fridge, etc.  It’s exciting to really be starting fresh, but part of me still curses the bed bugs for forcing us to toss everything.  Some rooms are just going to have to be empty for a while 🙂

Ok, I had better get back to work, have a wonderful Friday bloggies!!

Grey’s, why do you do this to me? January 15, 2010

I obviously didn’t have time to blog yesterday as Grey’s/Private Practice were a double-crossover.  Did you see?  What are your thoughts?  I’m just kind of melancholy about the whole thing.  I KNEW that the writers just couldn’t let everyone be happy, and really…Katherine Heigl should make up her mind – TV or movies, quit screwing with the story lines!!

I’ll be back tonight or tomorrow with more regular updates, we have 10 or so houses to look at this weekend (unless they’re sold before then) but tomorrow’s a very lazy day!

happy Friday!

Is it dorky… December 20, 2009

…that the music my in-laws are blasting was my traditional “I’m stressed and need a mini-dance party” music through college?  I hope not…because they’re blaring Bob Seger downstairs (greatest hits?) and I can barely keep my booty in one place!  I don’t remember the blaring tunes last weekend…so maybe it’s a special occasion?  Hmm…

Yesterday was a whirlwind, as expected.  (Oh…Hollywood Nights just came on…) We woke up around 6:45 and were out the door at 7.  First stop – Burger King.  Chris had the cheesy bacon/egg wrap and I had French Toast Sticks.  Then, we packed, and packed, and threw things away, and packed.  We ended up filling 2.5 more dumpsters with our furniture, “apartment” storage (plastic bins/etc) and other miscellaneous stuff.  And the rest of our apartment fit into a 5×10 storage unit with room to spare.  On my week off at the end of the year I have to go over and finish laundry (#$%^&*! bed bugs!!) and vacuum before the exterminator comes again on the 29th.  And then, we’re done!  We’ll turn in our keys on the 8th or 9th and then meet with the realtor the 9th to start the “fun” part!

Yesterday evening was “Christmas” at the in-laws, (pause, new song…I recognize it, but don’t know the name…waiting on the chorus to update you all).  We had a really nice evening visiting with our niece, eating a great dinner, and opening gifts. Dinner was unpictured – but I passed on the ham (have you seen the video’s on meat.org?  I just can’t get those images and the images from Food Inc out of my mind…so I’m going to have to stick with my local/organic meats and cannot wait til we have a house and can order straight from the farmers).  Anyway…so for dinner I had butter noodles, a roll, scalloped potatoes (that’s what they called them, but it seemed like potatoes in a cream of mushroom soup) and corn.  The rolls were leftover from my Thanksgiving bake-a-thon

I was super excited about my gifts:

  • Grey’s Anatomy Season 5
  • The Twilight Boxed Set
  • A pryex whisk that scrapes the side of the bowl
  • A donut pan
  • A gift card for a local running store

Chris also got some video game thing that he’s  been lusting over for a few months now…boring 😉

Here are some favorite pictures of our niece from last night, she’s turning into such a ham with sticking her tongue out, blowing raspberries and just being an overall cutie-patootie!  We went a wee bit overboard with gifts for her and got her a baby sweatsuit, fleece lined hot pink “crocs,” a hot pink sleeper with penguins on it, a soft book about a puppy and the “big gift” a Winnie the Pooh hundred acre jet (Bob’s back on…Against the Wind).  The jet’s a little advanced for her (she’s 5 months old) but she will grow into it and the adults had a great time playing with it!

(I know she looks a little orange, I’m working on the Netbook which only has one photo correction program right now and the picture was too cute not to post…she’s putting EVERYTHING in her mouth right now as she’s starting to teethe ).

And now I need to get cleaned up – we need to head to Costco for a couple things and Chris needs something from Best Buy for his new “toy.”  Have a great day bloggies!

Holy Crap We’re Moving December 10, 2009

I have gotten a lot of things crossed off my “Holy Crap We’re Moving” Checklist today.  I didn’t really write it down…but I am mentally checking things off.

Today, during lulls at work I have:

1.  Reserved a storage unit, we’ll go sign the paperwork this weekend.  I called on a good day – we get the first 30 days for only $23!

2.  Contacted realtor – we’ll meet with her on January 9th.  That gives us time to finish getting the apartment cleaned out/exterminated and also work on our down payment *shakes fist at apartment complex for “stealing” our $$*

3.  Contacted mortgage company to verify how long our pre-approval lasts and clear up a few questions we came up with last night/this morning that we forgot yesterday during the app process.

4.  Started looking at houses over my lunch break, reminding myself to look past cosmetic issues and think of the “bones.”

5.  Made a list of things for Chris to pick up from the apartment tonight that I cannot live without until Saturday (Amazing Grass, Organic Milk, Amazing Grass shaker cup and a couple books I just traded on SwapTree).

6.  Set up mail forwarding through post office.

7.  Changed address with work (so my W2 goes to the right place).

8.  Changed address with NetFlix (so we have entertainment at the IL’s).

I think that’s it…this weekend we’ll cancel our cable/internet and deal with the electric company.  Still need to talk to the insurance company about cancelling our renter’s insurance, or if it’s best to carry it til we get a house to keep the multi-policy discount.  Can anyone think of anything I’m forgetting??

Only 45 more minutes in the office and then it’s time to experience my first “long-long” train commute…I think door to door it will be about an hour and a half, but we’ll see!

Anyone else going through it’s Thursday where’s Grey’s withdrawal???
